research shows that having a pet makes you “less lonely, have higher self-esteem, get more exercise, be more extroverted,” etc. we know this. i just like the title of the article: friends with benefits: on the positive consequences of pet ownership.

this research does not, however, account for the toll taken on the human psyche when one’s furry companion becomes violently and terrifyingly ill and one spends all night at the animal hospital and then one spends a great many dollars one does not actually have on fixing said furry companion. not that this happened last night or anything.
